“It’s only a niche when they share a problem”

If you read my previous post you’ll know that I’ve been doing a lot of think about my business where I’m at and my move to cull out the stuff I’m not enthusiastic about and focus on the projects and tasks that excite me.  This morning, I was reading the last blog post from Copyblogger, called 6 Online Marketing Mistakes that Will Kill Your Business, and point number #2 really resonated with me.  Actually it SCREAMED at me! (Thanks Copyblogger for the title!)

Marketing to a demographic, not a niche. This jumped out at me as if I was going through one of those hauted houses at the a theme park or local fair.  Wait a minute, I thought to myself.  Is that what I’m doing?  Immediately that’s what it felt like.  Copyblogger defines a niche as ““a group of people with a common problem who congregate together.”

Homer Simpson, slapped in ForeheadYikes!  That’s exactly what I haven’t been doing.  My market so far has been focusing on women, successful business women mind you but women.  This isn’t a niche, it’s a demographic.  So immediately, I thought with my shift in how I’m going to operate and the services I’m going to offer to new incoming clients how do those services fit this definition?  My focus in services is moving to a project based model offering Newsletter Support, WordPress Implementation & Customization, eCommerce Setup & Maintenance and eBook Formatting (I’ll make it look fantastic!).

So what do all of these services solve?  They’ll help you build your community and share your knowledge to the world easier and faster than you could do it yourself.  Fine, but specifically what problem am I help you solve, I’m making it easier for you to share your knowledge and build your community in a hassle free way.  So know, I think it’s time I get more specific on the type of women I wish to connect with and fine tune my message.

Thanks Copyblogger for giving the virtual hit on the forehead to help me start to get clear on what I need to do.

What about you?  Do you market currently to a niche or a demographic and if you realized you’re marketing to a demographic what do you need to do to define your niche?  I’d love to hear your feedback and I’m thinking there’s another post in this coming up.  I’ll let you know what I come up with.  In the meantime share your stories and thoughts…

You've made my day Renee, thank you!

Melinda,

Thank you for writing what you did, all of the tips you provided were incredibly valid, but that simple line that I used in my title just hit me like a tonne of bricks and has inspired me to share my whole process with my readers, so thank YOU!
